Inherited Hats.

June 23, 2013

Sarah loves hats.

And what’s even better, she looks good in hats. (Which not everyone can say. Including me.)

Fortunately, for my hat-loving daughter, we have a wonderful hat-loving blog friend named Cindy.  (She has actually visited the Outer Banks several times from her home in California so she’s an “in real life friend,” too!)

Cindy had in her possession a selection of quirky, unique, lovely hats and knowing how much Sarah loves hats, she decided to bequeath them to her. A lot of the hats were given to Cindy by her beloved Aunt Moureen so we feel extra fortunate to be the recipient of such a family legacy of inherited hats.

Sarah had a great time unpacking the box when it arrived; however, since she was getting ready to leave for the evening, she only had a few moments to try a couple of them on.

Last night we finally had a chance to put aside a half hour and give the hats their Official Smith Welcome. We did that by throwing a Mother Daughter Hat Trying On Party which was great fun since Sarah loves to pose and I love to photograph people who love to pose. (We make a good team.)

Here is the whole fabulous collection.

or the back.  (We’re still not real sure.)

Cindy also sent several exotic, vintage pocketbooks which Sarah loved.

What fun to spend an afternoon enjoying inherited hats!

Many, many, many thanks to Cindy for your generous-hearted and lovely gift. Your dear Aunt Moureen had fabulous taste in hats–and nieces.

What about you?

Which of the seven hats was your favorite hat? Why?

Hat 2, pic 2. Just love the angle at which she’s holding it and her profile under it–so pretty!

    Love deb

  2. I love #7, but they’re all so adorable!

I’m curious – I was always told the elastic bands on these hats went under the hair at the nape of the neck, rather than under the chin. Has anyone else ever heard this?

    • Cindy from Sonoma says:

Yes, it is true. I think Sarah looked great with it under her chin, but will probably be happy to learn the way they were worn.

      • Becky says:

        Stefanie and Cindy,

Well, I’m glad you ladies are reading along here because we had NO clue as to what to do with that elastic band. I thought it looked a little bit obvious under the chin but had no foggy idea what else to do with it. Thank you for solving the mystery!! 🙂

  3. Kristina says:

I have to give another vote for #2, which I think I like the best because to me, it seems to suit Sarah the most. Then again, I know nothing about hats so perhaps my vote shouldn’t count!

  4. Becky says:

    Hi everyone!

How fun to read which hats were your favorites!

    Sarah’s favorites were #2 and #7.

But choosing a favorite for me is an impossibility because they ALL had their own unique charming attributes . It was such great fun to see her try them on and get to take all those pictures.

We’re thinking that she might make one wall of her room into a hat display; it would be a cool conversation starter!

  5. LeeAnne says:

#2 and #7 are my favorites on her, although she wears all of them so well!! What a fun gift! 🙂

  6. Lisa from Georgia says:

I like them all but I think the last one is the best. I do not wear hats well. I guess I could never be a duchess but Sarah Smith can rock a hat!! I love the pictures!

  7. Cindy from Sonoma says:

All the hats look wonderful on Sarah, but my favorite is #3, and always has been. #7 is a close second which surprises me since that was always my least favorite. Hat #5 is meant to be worn farther back on your head with the black thingies facing towards the face. I know Aunt Moureen would have loved watching Sarah model her hats. Hat #2 was the only hat of mine. These pictures made my day!

    • Becky says:

      Cindy,

Ahh. The mystery of the black thingies has been solved. We were quite puzzled by them! Sarah will have to try that hat on again the proper way. It’s fun getting a Hat Education! And on Hat 2, is the ribbon supposed to go in the back? We weren’t sure about that either. (You should have packed yourself in the box and come along to give instruction!)

      • Cindy from Sonoma says:

        Becky,

Yes the traditional way to wear hat #2 would be with the ribbon in the back. I think it looks pretty perky on Sarah with the ribbon in the front though.

  8. Nicole says:

#2, the blue one was my favorite! Thanks for sharing the hats with all of us!

  9. Fred says:

Becky, I thoroughly enjoyed your article on hats. Sarah is a beautiful “model”, and I have always thought that she had a “timeless movie star elegance”, which makes her photogenic in any setting. My fave – Hat No. 2. Why? Well – it just looks like Sarah to me. FWIW, my favorite photos of Sarah are when she is showing her “serious face.” The reason – although I don’t know Sarah – when she is wearing that “serious face”, I get the impression that she is working hard to keep her beautiful smile hidden. I picture her breaking out laughing the instant you press the camera shutter. 😉 (In a facebook comment to a friend on Saturday, I commented how much I wish hats – for both men and women – would make a comeback. Maybe Sarah will start the trend!) Thanks, Fred

  10. Jan Reuther says:

    # 4 because it’s so audrey Hepburn!!! Although I agree that they all look fantastic on the Smith model.

  11. Kathy says:

I like 3 or 7, she can definitely wear hats, so pretty. Sure wish I could wear a hat but I they do nothing for me! 🙂

  12. Mary H says:

Hat 4 ….or, maybe Hat 1….absolutely LOVE the red pocket book. Sarah is a model that all models should aspire to be like. She is just so classy and stylish and what a treat for her to love the real style in fashion, i.e. hats, gloves, pocketbooks. I miss those days.

  13. Kim Waggoner says:

Hat #6 is my favorite on Sarah. I’m not sure why? 🙂
She makes them all look cute, though.

  14. Mrs. Pam says:

    Sarah
I think you could wear either #1 or #4 to the next Royal Wedding.
I like #5 ….with the feathers going back (like they would if they were on a bird)… because it is sorta whimsical.
and I love your pearls, too. You look GORGEOUS in all of them.
This morning i actually found a bag with some of my hats, so i smiled when I read the title of this blog. But, my hats were mostly berets or snuggy winter ones. but, I was sooo happy to find the yellow one that my mother used to wear on the golf course. I thought I had lost it.

  15. Sharon Holweger says:

I like the blue one the best…. why…. don’t know, maybe just because I like blue so much. I thought they were all quite interesting … what a fun gift!!!
