The Summer Smith Report on Sarah

January 17, 2015

 Summer here.

We’ve all been a little big anxious around the house lately, waiting for the doctor to call. Whenever the phone rings, Mom gets so alarmed that she leaps three feet up and two feet sideways.  But so far, all that leaping has done no good.  None of the calls have been from the doctor.

I just want to say that I am waiting just as hard for this phone call as everyone else. I know how much it means to my sister, to Mom and Dad, and to all of you.

Mom and Dad were out of town for twelve hours yesterday; when they finally got home last night they told Sarah and me, “No news, yet.” I flopped myself onto the bed in frustration and discouragement.

I was so sad for Sarah, and wishing fervently with my tiny (but big) doggie heart that the news would come soon. I do so hope that everything is okay and that Sarah and I can keep on hanging out together without her having to run out the door all the time for doctor appointments and yucky procedures that make her cry. I hate it when my sister cries.

I look at with her my most worried expression and sometimes even lick her face, trying my best to help her feel better.

I don’t know exactly what the word cancer means, but from what I can tell, it is an ugly word that makes tears come into people’s eyes.  My mom had it once and my sister had it before and for some reason, the word makes a lot of Kleenex pile up on the floor and on the kitchen table.

But don’t worry anything on this end–I have things under control.  I keep myself very busy, trotting from Smith Person to Smith Person, checking in with them, lying beside them, letting them scratch my tummy, (if they insist), and basically just doing a little nursing triage work, deciding who needs the most comfort at any given time. It’s exhausting sometimes, but I love my job.

I’ve done some extra snuggling with Mom this week and I’ve seen all the tears that come into her eyes. Whenever I notice them, I snuggle a little closer and take a deep sigh.  I tell her, “It’s all going to be okay, sweet mama.  No matter what news the phone call brings, you’ve always got me to comfort you.”

I love my mama. I love my sister.  I love my dad. Thanks for loving them, too.

Thankful that Summer has done such a fine job of taking over Snowy’s nursing role. Furbabies are, quite simply, good for the soul. Unconditional love.. kind of like Jesus with fuzzy feet…

Summer, thanks for the terrific update. You are a wonderful member of the Smith family! You all are lucky to have each other . . . you all care for each other in your own special ways. My thoughts and prayers are with your family that “the call” will come soon and the news will be good so that all of you Smiths can go back to “hanging out together” (as you call it, Summer) without the stress, worry, constant running to doctor appointments, yucky procedures and boxes of Kleenex associated with the word “cancer”. Love to all of the Smith family (two legged and four!)
