Today, Nathan turns twenty-four.
I realize that when a son becomes an adult, you don’t make as big a deal over his birthday as you did when he was just a little fella. But I’m feeling extra sentimental today since this is Nathan’s last birthday before his own child is born—a birthday marking the end of one precious era and the beginning of another.
I must say that looking at pictures of him when he was a baby is taking on an added fascination for me as I try to picture what his own son is going to look like. I am so excited about that first meeting.
When Nathan was little, one of the many nicknames I gave him was “Sonny One.” He was my first son and he was also such a cheerful, sunny child so the name combined both things.
In honor of the day when my Sonny One came into my life, I’d like to share with you a celebratory conglomeration of Nate Pictures.

I love you, Nathan Andrew Smith and can’t wait till the day you meet your own Sonny One. You made me a mom and Noah will make you a dad– the Sonny One Circle will continue.
This is a beautiful tribute! My son, Noah, is almost 16 and I get panicked at the thought that one day he will not be in his room when I call him to dinner…I will not hear his footsteps as he comes upstairs to tell me good night…I will not have him waiting expectantly for the chocolate-chip cookies to come out of the oven and tell me they are the best ever. I know there are more wonderful days ahead as he grows into adulthood, but to have one more night to read him his favorite bedtime story, tucked under the covers smelling like soap and little boy…it goes too fast. I tell every young mom, “Treasure each moment!”
In one of those pictures Inthought Steve was Nathan. It took a minute to realize it. Happy Birthday to Nathan!
I mean I thought. I hate auto correct! How dare they think they know what I am thinking!
Lisa,
Yes, you can definitely tell they are father and son! And I hate auto correct, too; you never know what your machine decides that you want to say. 🙂
Sweet memories.
Steve, yes, indeed. Those early days sure went fast!
Happy Birthday, Nathan. Wiping away a tear or two here, Becky. Thank you for a beautiful birthday post.
I have been out of the office for about 10 days. Had a wonderful time with my grandson and daughters and thousands of other people who attended the Greentree Festival in Kirkwood. The committee I am on is one group of wonderful volunteers. Such a fun community event. I look forward to “catching up” on the Smithes today.
Mary,
So glad you had a great time with your family and hanging out at the Festival. Sounds like great fun!
