Smitty’s Snippets (A Video)

December 5, 2012

Well, for those of you who said it was on your Bucket List to travel to Manteo and attend one of our programs, I have good news for you. I am bringing a little snippet of the program to YOU!

The attached video is a mere 2 1/2 minutes long and and yet is packed full of three lively snippets from our recent Smitty’s Christmas Variety Show held at our church.

Smitty’s Snippet 1:  Steve comes out in his “Smitty” costume and sings the opening number.  (I’m playing the piano for him.)  He and I wrote the little ditty a long time ago and we dust it off periodically for these sorts of events.  (We also have a non-Christmas rendition of it.)

Smitty’s Snippet 2:  Steve does a little dance with Miss Libby, a classy grandma in our church who was raised by a mother who owned a dance academy.  (Her daughter also teaches dance locally.)  She loves to dance and she and Steve are just way too cute together.

Smitty’s Snippet 3: I sing a 20- second portion of Winter Wonderland.  I didn’t include any more of it because the person who was filming didn’t realize that the camera setting had gotten bumped which caused me to be out of focus.  But at least you can hear (and hopefully enjoy) a little of the singing.

And also let me just clarify that this is NOT a worship service; this is a community-oriented, fun, family night of music, dance, and drama.  Our worship services, while still utilizing some elements of music, drama (and even dance), are by no means as wild and wacky as one of these fun event nights, although we still manage to enjoy ourselves in our regular services, as well.  No one ever said church had to be boring!

As you can probably tell, Steve and I love the arts and believe that creativity, drama, music and dance shouldn’t be relegated to the back burner.   As long as everything is in good taste and family friendly, we love the idea of bringing people together to laugh, enjoy each other and celebrate the gift of creativity!

So here you go–enjoy!

I was just thinking that I wished we could see the show even though we live far away! Thanks so much for posting this video! It looks like you all, and your community, had a wonderful evening! 🙂 Our church is doing our LIve Nativity this weekend. It’s always a fun event, too!

Gayle, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a live nativity; a nearby church is doing one next week so maybe I need to pop over there and see it. It sounds fascinating and also like it would be a lot of work! At least you’re in AL and don’t have to deal with sub zero temps. I’m thinking outdoor live nativities wouldn’t be too popular in the midwest where I grew up!

I really want to come to a Smitty Variety Show now! I just loved it…wish there was more. I’ve always heard that you know a show is a success when the audience comes away wanting more.

    • Becky says:

Lisa, how true that is–the last thing we would want to do is have the audience wanting less. NOT a good thing! 🙂 But we had a grand time!

  7. Mrs. Pam says:

that was fun, but not long enough……

Becky, you sure don’t sound as though your breathing is compromised…you sound fantastic! Now, where on Earth does Steve get all his energy? What are you feeding him???

Thank you so much for sharing a little bit of your variety show.

    • Becky says:

Jan, thanks for the compliment on my singing. Thankfully, that was a fairly easy song. Not exactly sure where Steve gets all his energy–I think he’s just naturally zippy!

Steve totally cracks me up 🙂 And Becky, I wish I could have heard you sing the whole song, your voice is beautiful!

    • Becky says:

Lesley, Steve cracks me up, too. He is a true ham. And thanks for your compliment on my singing; that’s one of my favorite Christmas arrangements. (by Amy Grant.)
