Playin’ and Singin’

June 4, 2014

I thought you might enjoy this one-minute clip of Steve and I performing a song I wrote when Nathan was about three years old. It’s called Rain of the Refreshing.

If you’re wondering what in the world Steve is singing, it’s called a vocalized bass line.  He actually sings what a bass guitar would play if the song used instruments.  He’s always been able to do that particular musical feat ever since I’ve known him and I never fail to be impressed by it.

The second video is Steve and the drummer from our church. They’re doing a song that Steve wrote a bazillion years ago; in fact, this is the first song Steve ever sang and played for me. In this particular tune, Steve is doing something called scat singing which Wikipedia defines like this:

In vocal jazz, scat singing is vocal improvisation with wordless vocables, nonsense syllables or without words at all. Scat singing is a difficult technique that requires singers to have the ability to sing improvised melodies and rhythms using the voice as an instrument rather than a speaking medium.  (Louie Armstrong did a lot of scat singing.)

I bet you never knew Steve was such a talented fella did you?

What’s next . . . opera?  You never know with that guy!

Both of the songs were performed at a recent Variety Show that our church hosted.  Enjoy!

      Lorrie,

You are more than welcome! 🙂 And since our singing together days go back forty years, we’ve made MANY musical memories together!

You guys are great! The videos played perfectly on my laptop. I just wanted to share that of all the people that I have ‘met’ on the internet in the past 20 years (blogs, support groups, etc), your family speaks the most to me. Not sure why, probably many reasons, but there is something about all of you that just reaches across the miles and connects. And I am thankful to you for sharing.
Back to the videos… so entertaining and uplifting!

      Lesley,

What a sweet thing to say; your words made my whole day! I feel so honored that we have connected through words and stories and life experiences. What a joy to be a part of this community.

So happy you enjoyed the videos! One of the things I love most about our marriage is that we get to make music together.

Glad Sarah is feeling better . . .

      Liz,

Thanks for the compliment! And yes, I am feeling about 80% better; still working on getting back to full strength before all our family arrives next week for Sarah’s big occasion!

    Jenna,

Hmmmm, that’s odd. I can see them on my laptop and my desktop. Do you normally have video issues on the tablet? Glad you enjoyed hearing the music, at least. 🙂

I couldn’t get the videos to play but it sounds neat. It might be because I am reading your blog on a tablet instead of a computer.
