Roll Call. A Southern Winter

February 26, 2015

Roll Call

I know I’ve probably done this at some point in the past, but I wanted to repeat it since I know I’ve had a good number of new readers come on board in recent years.

And just what is the “this” that I’m talking about?

Well, it’s a Smithellaneous Roll Call; a request from Mrs. Smithellaneous for you to take 30 seconds to leave a comment with what state you’re from. I’m curious to know how close I am to having readers from all fifty states.

If you want to add your city, that would be fun, too. And if you want to go all out and include what the temperature is today where you live? That would be marvelous.  (Other countries are also welcome to jump in.)

And speaking of other countries, I was digging through my blog stats a couple of days ago and came across my roll call of countries.  (These are my page views since January 1, 2015.)  It’s so cool to see all those interesting places pop up!

 A Southern Winter

I know this has been a challenging winter for many—cold temps and way too much of the white stuff.

Manteo hasn’t escaped the bitter blast. Last week, the sound froze over for only the second time in over fifty-five years.

I took this picture last summer . . .

and these pictures last week.

The beach is actually quite beautiful when sand is replaced with snow.

Here’s wishing you all some hot chocolate (with marshmallows) to help ease the freeze a tad.  And here’s a photo to make you smile as you sip.

  21. Rachel K. says:

West Fargo, ND. We actually will hit 20 degrees today but with a nice south wind at 25-35 miles per hour. So it will still feel cold. Oh and we hardly have had any snow all year. Can still see grass. NC has probably had more snow/cold days than us since we are at zero! We don’t close for cold. It can be 50 below and school is still on here!

    • Becky says:

      Rachel,

It’s hard to believe ND didn’t get much snow! Of course, the cold is just as much as hardship. Even though I grew up in WI, school at 50 below zero is amazing. Y’all are some tough folks! 🙂

I just spent a few moments entertaining myself by listing the entries in Excel… assuming I didn’t make any mistakes (ha!) you have readers from 34 states and 4 countries who have signed in thus far. The states you’re missing are: Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Hawai’i, Kentucky, Michigan, Montana, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Utah, Vermont, and Wyoming.

Maybe if you call them out you’ll get a few new lurkers to come out of the woodwork and represent their states!

    • Becky says:

Kristina–you’re an angel! I was going to try and find time to do that this weekend and never got to it. Thank you. I will definitely put out a call for those missing states. 🙂

      • Cindy from Sonoma says:

Becky, I lave read your post both in HA and SC, so you are two states closer. I bet that doesn’t surprise you in the least.

      • Kristina says:

No problem 🙂 . It worked out well, actually… it wasn’t quite bedtime but it was too late to start any major task. So a bit of data compilation was just the right amount of interesting-ness to take up the half-hour before bed.

  30. Kristina says:

Fairbanks, AK… and the weather has been ridiculous this winter! Warmer than it is supposed to be (in fact warmer at times than much of the East Coast), which results in icy road conditions that we are not equipped to handle. The Dept of Transportation here doesn’t use salt on the roads, first because there’s snow so much of the year that it would be terrible for automobiles, and second because it is often so cold that the salt would do more harm than good. However maybe we should keep some on-hand for the really lousy times when it gets above freezing and all of the roads freeze to literal ice-rinks.

I got stuck on the way home last weekend… trying to get up a hill, and my vehicle just started spinning, and then rolling backwards. When I opened the door to step out of the vehicle, I just skated right down the hill. Absolutely zero traction. I’d have been better off with ice skates!

    • Becky says:

      Kristina,

Yikes. Skating down a hill without ice skates? Sounds treacherous . . . and maybe just a little fun. 🙂 Although I must say, having a vehicle “skate” backwards down a hill would NOT be a good thing.

I had never though of Alaska being a state that didn’t use salt but your explanation made sense. Learn something every day!

    Stay warm!
    Linda in Pittsburgh

    • Becky says:

Thank you, Linda, for the photo compliments! 🙂 I’m thankful it’s the first of March today which means that spring is one day closer. Woo-hoo!

  41. Nancy says:

Near Colorado Springs CO here. It was -1 this morning but has warmed up to 13 above!

  42. Karo says:

Burnsville, NC, in the mountains. It’s 38 degrees and sunny on this beautiful Friday afternoon. I am a teacher, and we’ve had one day of school in the last two weeks.

    • Becky says:

      Karo,

ONE day of school in two weeks? Incredible!

      • Karo says:

Yep! We are very rural, with lots of twisty, curvy roads. Many of the side roads are shady, and one of the worst side roads to be on in winter weather is called Seven-Mile Ridge–literally up the side of a mountain. So, even if the roads are decent in town, many students live up in hollows (“hollers”) or in higher elevations and can’t safely ride the buses to school. There are just too many side roads for the DOT to keep them all clear during winter storms. Right now, our students won’t get out of school for the summer until June 12, due to all the snow days.

      Vicki,

I always feel sorry for the poor people who have to make those decisions about closing schools. Glad it’s not my job–trying to second guess the weather! 🙂

  53. Susie says:

Hi Becky. Fort Collins Colorado. 3 degrees. Been following your blogging since Caring Bridge days. We met a stranger while on vacation who asked us to pray for Sarah. You are an inspiring writer. Our daughter is moving to NC in May ( husband in Army). I am excited to come visit your state. Love you pictures!

    • Becky says:

      Susie,

Thanks for leaving a comment! I am always interested to hear about how people even found this blog and it’s fascinating that you met a stranger on vacation who asked you to pray for Sarah! Amazing.

So glad you have a good reason to visit NC. You will LOVE it.

P.s. Thanks for your encouraging words about my writing and photography; you encouraged me!

  54. Wendy says:

Good Morning! Its only -11 below here in Hines MN this morning. I regular old heatwave after having -25, -41 was my coldest morning, then add on wind chill, its enough to freeze your nose hairs the minute you stick your head out the door…ha!

    • Becky says:

      Wendy,

Yes, I can well imagine my own personal nose hairs freezing at those temps. My hat is off to you and all of your fellow Minnesotans.

  55. Renee says:

Canada here and it’s -6F at the moment, “feels like” temp is -19F. I’m so done with the cold!!

  56. Sarabeth Meadows says:

    Sarabeth, Huntington, WV its 14

  57. Nancy says:

Avon, Connecticut. It’s 9 degrees this morning which is better than the minus 9 degrees we had earlier this week.

  58. Denise says:

California girl here! We’ve actually been a little chilly and rainy this week – it’s only supposed to go to 66* tomorrow. We’re also expecting rain from Saturday to Tuesday. However, we are glad for the rain because the state is still very much in a drought, and every bit helps.

Living in Southern California, we’re spoiled. We really do think that weather in the 60s is cold, because normally we’re warmer than that. We’re acclimated to warm weather all the time. You will see people walking around in parkas and boots when it’s in the low 60s, or, perish the thought, high 50s, which might seem absurd anywhere else. We do know that compared to the weather than most of the country is getting, we’re very, VERY blessed.

    • Becky says:

      Denise,

It is so true that i just depends on what you’re used to, temp-wise. When I grew up in Wisconsin, people would call 5 below “brisk.” It’s interesting in CA that 66 is chilly. Love hearing all these different perspectives from different places.

  59. Catherine says:

Zebulon NC! Oh probably in the 20s. Almost 3am. USA!!

  60. Anonymous says:

Babette checking in from Germany. It’s 41 ° F and rainy here. Have a great day!

  61. Fred & Lucy checking in from Virginia Beach, VA. It’s 29 degrees at 11:30pm. It snowed from about midnight last night until early this afternoon. Currently about 4″ of snow on the ground, with an icy coating forming on top. 😉

  62. Rix. says:

Becky, I live in Midland, Texas. We are half way between El Paso and Dallas. It’s supposed to be 23 for a low tonight and our high is to be 30 tomorrow. By Sunday it’s expected to be 73. Our weather is a little crazy here this winter. We’ve had some warm temps and our trees have started to bud out. Very little snow this year, but had a bad ice storm that was the worst in 40 years that we have lived here. Everybody had broken limbs. I’ve followed your blog for many years and enjoy your pictures and following your family.

    • Becky says:

      Rix,

From 23 to 73? That really is crazy! Although I’m sure after those low temps, you are more than happy to see some spring-ish weather arriving. I always love it when buds start showing up on the trees.

Thanks for following the blog for all these years and thank you for leaving a comment. Happy (almost) spring time to you!

  63. SueEllen says:

I currently live in Mesquite, Texas (Dallas suburb) where it is currently 33 degrees. My hometown is Rainelle, WV which this past weekend had the dubious distinction of topping NOAA’s list of the most snowfall in a 24-hour period with 24 inches officially recorded. I saw friends post pictures of up to 30 inches. Your pictures of the sound frozen over are absolutely gorgeous!! Thank you for braving the cold to get them!

    • Becky says:

      Sue Ellen

24 inches in 24 hours? If I didn’t have to go outside in it, it would be absolutely amazing to watch it fall. I just feel bad for those folks dealing with the aftermath. Unbelievable.

Glad you enjoyed the sound pictures. It was a little bit cold but I couldn’t let such a momentous occasion pass without recording it! (Especially since I love taking pictures at that bridge in all seasons.)

  64. Sarah says:

Hoffman Estates, Il here and it’s a lovely -3 at the moment with the weather man claiming it’s only going to get colder over night.

Today it’s 8 degrees (tonight’s low will be below zero) & last week it was -12 & “it felt like” -50 w/ the darn windchill!
More snow last night/early this am but not too much—about 4 inches!
    Sure can’t wait till Spring!

  68. Farmington, MO-about an hour south of St. Louis. Been following the Smith family journey for years. The wind chills here are way below zimro this week with more of the white stuff than we could possibly want. Well, maybe that more than I could possibly want!! Never liked snow, not even as a kid!

  69. Dale Tousley says:

Wake Forest, NC…..6 inches of snow on the ground this morning, 38 degrees and lost power for 14 hours!!!

    • Becky says:

      Dale,

Fourteen hours!! Oh my. That is NO fun, especially when it’s so cold and you don’t have heat. I hope your heat is back on and you are staying cozy!

  70. St. Louis, MO – although I’m responsible for a few of the hits from the UK last month. 🙂

    • Becky says:

      Stefanie,

Well, thanks for traveling all the way to the UK so I could have a few more hits from there. 🙂 I’m quite jealous that you got to go!

  71. EL says:

I grew up in southern Virginia, most recently lived in upstate New York (where last year we had several weeks of minus teens Fahrenheit), and now reside in Germany. And where I live, it has barely dropped below freezing all winter. I have slept most nights this winter (down to around 30 F) with a thick duvet and an open window. And I’ve been thoroughly disappointed. 😉

    • Becky says:

      EL,

I can’t quite imagine sleeping with an open window in 30 degree weather! And can’t imagine anyone being disappointed it’s not colder! Yikes! I’ll be in bed with my heated mattress cranked all the way up. 🙂

  72. Gina says:

Florham Park NJ! But I have read your blog also living in Florida and Missouri! 🙂

  74. Melissa says:

Sebring, FL here; it’s been gorgeous, sunny, and in the 80’s the last few days, but today is overcast and only about 67 degrees. Forecast says we’ll be back in the 80’s by the weekend though!

  75. jenwales says:

I’m in Silver Spring, MD, which is just outside of Washington, DC. We made it to 32 degrees today. Heat wave!

    • Becky says:

      Jen,

We actually did several concerts in Silver Spring back during our road years. I always loved going to that area of the country. Enjoy your heat wave!

  76. Elizabeth B says:

  81. Ann Martin says:

  82. Elizabeth says:

Winston-Salem, North Carolina – we had about five inches of snow last night and it is 37 degrees now with a real feel of 50!!

  83. Guerrina says:

Ledyard, CT – light snow and now some weak sun…I gave up looking at the temps! It’s winter…it’s cold…it’s beautiful and simultaneously inconvenient…it’s New England! I just bundle up and head out to work! March is arriving and will most likely bring a “last hurrah” from Winter and I can then begin to put my thermals away! Now that is something to look forward to! lol

I find your pictures of the winter beach and sound stunning!

  84. Mel says:

HaHa – I just have to add that I work in a little town called Paris (Ontario) so I looked up weather in Paris, France and it is 11c or your 51 but raining. I would take that right now over the last month of freezing. I guess I will just dream. 🙂

  85. Mel says:

Woodstock, Ontario, Canada where it is currently a balmy -11c (12.2f) with windchill making it feel like -18 (-0.4f). That being said tomorrow they are calling for -21 (-5.8 f) and then with windchill making it feel like -29 (-20 f). Weekend looks good she says with tongue in cheek….Sat -6 (21 f) and Sunday downright summer at -3 (26.6 f) but with the summer weather comes………MORE SNOW ON SUNDAY. Ugh….I need to move South. 🙂

      JLB,

It’s been a long time since I’ve been in any weather in the negative numbers. I was beyond cold when it got down to twelve degrees here last week–the negatives would have done me in! (And I’m a Wisconsin girl, too. You’d think I’d be tougher than that!)

I lived most of my adult life just north of Buffalo, NY, and I’ve been feeling a bit of “survivor guilt” every time I go out without needed a winter jacket!

    • Becky says:

      Jan,

I can only imagine how weird it must feel to be in (relatively) warm weather after making it through so many Buffalo winters. Don’t feel guilty–enjoy!! 🙂

We’ve been lucky w/the snowfall this winter… so, I shouldn’t complain, but the COLD is soooo painful. Monday, when going in to school, I dropped my cane, and couldn’t get the door open, and UGH…. sat with a heating pad for 5 hours to thaw out.

Becky, if you read this today, please pray for my Godddaughter Betsy, who is scheduled
for a 3pm C-section, to have a safe and happy outcome delivery.
