My Hat Is Off To You

Don’t need a lot of commentary on these photos.

(Note: many of the photos were taken from miscellaneous FB posts by residents over the past couple of days so I don’t have names for each photo.)

Wednesday night we had winds gusting to 75 m.p.h., thunder snow (and lightning,) big booms (caused by rapidly dropping pressure,) rain, then freezing rain, and then snow.  Lots of it!  (At least for southerners.)  I think we got about 4 inches of snow and last night, our wind chills were down near zero.

So just to revisit the title of this post:

All of you readers who deal with this stuff day after day and week after week?  You are amazing.  Really and truly amazing.

My aforementioned, proverbial hat really IS off to you.

(Except I’ll have to put it back on because it’s really cold outside!)

Here is a link to some other snow pictures from the Outer Banks which are really cool to look at.

What about you?  Are in a place of snow or no snow? Do you love snow or dislike it a lot?

Wow, I can’t believe you got that much snow!!! As I am in a suburb west of Detroit, Michigan, yes, I am used to snow, freezing rain, ice, and nasty weather. I HATE winter! It is also too dark and dreary, usually from November through February/March.

  2. Marylea says:

I had hopes that we would see at least a little snow here in NE Florida but only got the cold. Maybe next time 🙂

    • Becky says:

      Marylea,

Snow in Florida? Now that really would be something. But certainly not unheard of! Here’s hoping for next time right along with you.

  3. Fred Johnson says:

The photos were fabulous! Thanks to all. Mostly glad to know that you are safe. (BTW, I thought those sonic booms were caused by Pastor Steve’s bass guitar. My apologies…) ❤️

I was wondering how you were faring down there and if you had gotten much snow. The pictures are beautiful. You didnt mention flooding, so I assume that was not an issue. We only got an inch here in DC, but Cape Cod(where I am from) got walloped with so much flooding. The highest since the Blizzard of ’78 and that’s saying something. So sad for all the people affected. Then the frigid temps blew in and it’s like an ice rink up there.

    • Becky says:

      Lesley,

I think it was on your FB page I saw videos/pictures of that flooding. I couldn’t believe how enormous the waves were! I’d rather have our winter problems any day over theirs. That is tough stuff especially with the frigid air in addition to the flooding. God’s grace to them.

Very unusual weather for you! Hate snow, live north of Syracuse , we get Lake effect snow, off the Great Lakes, sometimes we measure snow in feet, below 0 temps for tomorrow with minus 20-30 wind chill, need sunshine, luckily inhave a daughter who lives in Fla, will be visiting her soon

  6. SueEllen Williams says:

These pictures are BEAUTIFUL – my favorite is the one of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. I hope you’re snuggled under a warm, cozy blanket while posting this for our enjoyment – stay warm!

  7. Jodi says:

I live where we get snow and extreme cold but more of the later in recent years! This week’s temps have been below zero before factoring in the windchill with days @ -8 & -10 below with feels like temps of -18 & -20 below. Though that’s warm compared to where we’ve been & where we still will go b/f winter’s end. And, I LOATHE IT EVERY YEAR despite the cute boots. On the positive, those temps mean it’s too cold too snow. Ugh! Stay warm and save!

We have about 10 inches on the ground in Grand Forks, ND. However, it’s been there for a month or more. As I mentioned in a previous comment, below zero weather is typical here, so we are used to it (or as used to it you can be!)
I do not care for snow- as it’s falling, it’s pretty, but that’s it! I’m not a cold weather person, but this is where God placed me, for now!
    Happy Weekend!

    • Becky says:

      Krista,

I agree. Snow is so incredibly lovely when it is falling. It would be nice if it could just fall and fall but no accumulate. The best of both worlds! 🙂

  9. mrs pam says:

Not too much snow here, but COLD!!! We had a water main break on Wednesday, mainly in offices and lobby… not sure how much damage, but water was turned back on in 2-3 hours.

    • Becky says:

      Mrs. Pam,

A broken water main is NOT a happy thing. Sounds like it wasn’t too terrible damaging to hae water restored in a coupe of hours.

We have been leaving our taps running the past few days for that very reason.

  10. Kathy S says:

Your pictures are beautiful, I like the snow! I am from Minnesota and you have more snow than we do, we have had extreme cold. Seems like no matter where you are there is a weather story to talk about. I hope it warms up for you soon!

    • Becky says:

      Kathy,

I have lived in Minnesota and still have family there. A beautiful (but cold) stage!

Monday we are supposed to be in the high 40’s. Hooray!

  11. Cheryl Denton says:

You’re pun about putting your hat back on brought a delightful chuckle.
This season of life I am lov’n the snow — from inside! Our view from the living room window is beautiful! ❄️

  12. Phyllis says:

Beautiful pictures. I wondered if you were getting snow. We had about 1.5 inches Christmas Eve morning and some flurries other days. We do have the bone chilling coldness though, -11 on New Year’s Day. We have had 14 straight days that we haven’t even seen the freezing mark. I think Sunday its’ supposed to get to the high 30’s but 90% chance or rain. Next week through Wednesday is supposed to be warmed but Thursday drops back to barely 30. I personally would rather see some snow as maybe the temperature wouldn’t be quite so cold. My office is only 1/2 mile from home so I could walk to work if need be and could always work from home too.

    • Becky says:

      Phyllis,

You’d be brave to walk to work in those kinds of temps! I’m sure you would feel very invigorated by the time you got there!

  13. Cindy from Sonoma says:

I don’t think we’ve had that much snow this season so far. We have several inches on the ground because it is to cold to melt! The past several weeks have been frigid, so as little time as possible is spent outside. When we do go out many layers and a heavy coat are required. I think we are going to warm up in a few days, so looking forward to that!

    • Becky says:

      Cindy,

Wow. That is not very much snow for you guys. I imagine it’s getting ready to hit soon. In the meantime, I will be proud of myself for having more snow than MN!

  14. Ruth Rehberg says:

p.s. your “hat may be off,” but mine is staying on–gloves and scarf too! (20 below this morning)

  15. Ruth Rehberg says:

Glad you got proof of all that exotic snow in your neighborhood, to show your grand kids years down the road! Would love to have been in your nice, snowy, blizzard-thunder event! We have hardly had snow yet; an inch or two here and there, waiting for a big one– to call winter worthwhile! Nice to know you all made it through and don’t get another one this year… Ruth

    • Becky says:

      Ruth,

Seems really odd that you are in January with little snow. I have not doubt you’ll be seeing that Big One soon! Nice to think of you all, tucked away snuggly in your little house in the valley.

  16. LeeAnne says:

Wow! You really did get lots of snow! I love a good snow storm when I can stay at home and not have to get out in it. Otherwise, the remote start on the car for warming it up and the heated seats make getting out in it tolerable. I didn’t use to have these little luxuries so now I feel somewhat spoiled and would never buy another vehicle that wasn’t equipped like this. Oh, and the 4WD is a must too. Lol I hope that your outdoor vegetation can take the extreme cold. I guess you will find out come springtime. What a way to start the year eh?
I love seeing all the snow pictures. We had fog yesterday morning so all of the trees were covered in a thick frost. So pretty! And then when the sun came up, the frost started to really sparkle as it started to melt. I would have run outside to get a picture but it was only 4 degrees so no. Just no. 😀

    • Becky says:

      LeeAnne,

I am right there with you on the remote start and the heated seat. Once you get those things, it’s really hard to think of doing without them. I think we are just a little bit (happily) spoiled! 🙂

  17. Ann Martin says:

We got 3.8 inches according to one report and 6 according to another. The paper said 4 inches but it is not going away due to cold and wind chill. This morning the wind chill at 8:15 was 2 degrees. Could be zero Saturday and/or Sunday mornings. Beautiful if you can stay inside which is what we are doing. Be safe.

    • Becky says:

      Ann,

I’m so glad you and Jim can stay tucked safely inside. I know how much you love your snow so I can imagine you’ve been having a lovely time just sitting and looking at it. So beautiful!

  18. Sharyn McDonald says:

We are from MN, but they have just had the cold, not much snow. I say they, because we are visiting in Florida. Not very warm, but sure warmer than most of the country, especially the east. Thankful!!

  19. Donna T. says:

Oh my goodness! I don’t care for snow very much but would rather have that instead of ice! My son also lives on the coast in Wilmington and they got the same type of weather too! Stay safe and warm out there. Glad you just used other pictures instead of getting out there in those horrible temperatures and conditions!

    • Becky says:

      Donna,

I was in awe of those who were out tramping around getting all those snow pictures. I wouldn’t have minded the cold so much but walking on icy surfaces is not something I need to be doing. So I am thankful for all of my fellow photographers out there getting such great shots.
