A little detour from posting about the Israel trip . . .
The whole day we were in the air on Tuesday, the cough and sore throat I’d developed in Israel got worse and worse. Steve and I stayed at a hotel in Raleigh Tuesday night, and on Wednesday morning before we left for the drive home, Steve took me to an Urgent Care where the doctor diagnosed me with the flu. Since I am high risk (because of a compromised immune system and COPD), he gave me sternest instructions that if I should start feeling any worse in any way, that I was to see a doctor when we got to Manteo.
Well, late yesterday morning, Steve came into the room where I was sitting, took one look at my face and said, “Let’s go. We’re packing it up.”
It seemed like in just a matter of minutes I went from feeling basically miserable to downright, horribly miserable. I was overwhelmed with sudden fatigue, was loopy mentally and my chest was feeling tighter and tighter. Steve literally put my clothes on me (since I was sort of wandering in confused circles), settled me into the passenger seat and sped us along to Urgent Care. He even packed a suitcase because he was so sure I was going to be admitted to the hospital.
We ended up staying at Urgent Care several hours, the doctor contemplating the whole time whether or not I should be hospitalized. She ordered a chest x-ray (it showed I have bronchitis in addition to flu), gave me a bag of fluids (I was so dehydrated it took forever to find a vein), put me on oxygen, and gave me a Nebulizer treatment,
In the end, my oxygen levels came up enough for her to be comfortable sending me home with a fist full of prescriptions with further instructions to head straight to the Emergency Department if anything changed.
Steve has been a wonderful caregiver, despite the fact that he is battling a terrible cough. His doctor told him when we got back to town that he’s probably had the flu all along but he didn’t feel like it would accomplish anything to test him since it was too late in the game for Tamiflu.
So at any rate, that is the story behind the lack of postings from our Israel trip; I hope to be back on track again soon.
Have a great (flu-free) weekend!
Wow Becky: So sorry to read of you being ill but glad that the worst of it happened after the trip and in your own country.
Becky – you really scared me with that picture. Before I read your post I thought you were still in Israel and in the hospital. Silly me! Please don’t respond to my post, just know that I am thinking of you and Steve and wishing you both a speedy recovery. I just got over the endless coughing after 2 z-packs.
I’m so sorry to hear about this ! I hope you are feeling better soon. I will be praying for you.

Thank you to everyone for your kind comments and well wishes. In an effort to conserve energy for flu-recovery and getting my next post ready, I am not going to reply to each comment. But it has been a treat for my heart to read your encouragements. You’re the best.

Dear Becky, so sorry that you have the flu. We you one of those that did get the shot, but got the flu anyway? So glad Steve got you to the emergency room. Praying for complete healing.
Sorry to hear you are feeling so lousy. Flying for that long with not feeling well had to have been miserable. I know I’ve flown from KC to Tampa with the beginnings of a cold and it was not enjoyable. Hope you start feeling better soon. Let Steve take care of you!
Oh no! I’ve been wondering why it’s been so quiet in Smithellaneousville. 🙁 Praying that you both feel much better very soon!!
Oh Dear Becky, really hate that you have the flu. I am also high risk with my huge list of ailments, so I am using hand sanitizer like crazy and washing my hands all the time. I have never been a germaphobe but with how terrible the flu has been this year, I find myself getting a little OCD making sure I am doing all I can to avoid it. Hope you start feeling better soon. And even though we are looking forward to the pictures and grand stories about your trip, I am sure I speak for everyone here on your blog, your health and welfare are more important!! Have Steve take care of you and let Summer comfort you!! Prayers for your recovery!!
Sure hope you both are feeling better soon. I’m surprised you were allowed to board the plane home under the circumstances. This flu is frightening!
Oh no! That is horrible. Hope you are feeling better. Take it easy and slow. This flu is a terrible thing and it takes a long time to get back your full strength.
So sorry you are both sick. May you both feel better soon. Prayers and hugs from here to you. I am trying to be careful but must go to Walmart this afternoon for some needed grocery items. I am planning to wear a mask and hope it is a quick trip.
Sure do hate this for you guys. Wish I was there to take care of you! ❤ deb
Oh Becky that’s terrible. If I was closer I’d bring you some chicken soup. Prayers for both of you.
