For fifteen years, our family lived (quite happily) in 400 sq. feet of space. I became quite adept at eking out storage space from the smallest crevices and corners.
Now that I live in 2200 sq. feet of space, I am still a space-saving aficionado. One of the things I love to do is make use of the walls in our house for storage. A few cases in point.
My lovely daughter-in-law had taught me the trick of storing necklaces (and even earrings) on cork board nailed to the wall but unfortunately my burgeoning necklace collection (most of it bought at thrift stores for a couple dollars each) started outgrowing their cork board home.
And so last week I decided to put my walls to work. (I mean, all they were doing was just standing around.) I divided out all my long short necklaces and hung them up, leaving the longer ones on the cork board.
Not only is it a great way to see the necklaces, it also acts as a sort of closet decoration so it’s a win win. Plus I feel rather crafty, having actually pounded nails into a wall in a fairly straight line all by myself. (Hammer wielding and craft making are not among my list of gifts.)
Okay. That’s all the handy-dandy info I have for the moment!
Do you have a favorite organizational trick to share with the rest of us?
I have a pegboard in my closet with pegboard hooks that I hang all my jewelry on. Since I make jewelry, I have a BUNCH too! It goes from the underside of the shelf down to about 6″ from the floor. My hubby painted it black, so the jewelry really “pops.”
As a complete OCD-er, though I have to admit. That photo of yours? There’s a hanger on the rail BACKWARDS!!! Turn it around, please. LOL
Stefanie,
Actually the backward hanger is another of my organizational tricks. If I see something in my closet that needs to be ironed (which I only do once or twice a week) I turn it backwards to that when my ironing time comes, I can see at a glance which things I need to pull out. You’ll just have to squinch your eyes a little if you look at that closet picture any more. 🙂
Love the idea of jewelry popping against a black background; VERY decorative!
Ah! That’s a great idea! 🙂 I *think* I can look at it and not freak out now. 🙂
Rebecca,
Good for you finding the courage to clean out your kitchen drawer! I just did that recently and needed a very long nap when I was done. 🙂
Loved the battery storage tip; that keeps them all in one place and easy to find and easy to see. Fantastic idea!
Wonderful necklace collection! My day is good if I remember to put on earrings! Organizational technique? Hmmm….(1) rather than fold my bath towels, dish towels, etc. into flat squares, etc., I roll them and I actually fit more into their respective spaces AND it makes my linen closet look very spa-like…(2) For sheet sets I fold both sheets and one pillow case (only if there’s more than one to the set) and place them all in the remaining pillowcase…no missing pieces! Was very helpful when training my son to take care of his own bed. Okay, I’m organized out now!
Guerrina,
Love the tip about putting sheets and pillow case into the remaining pillow case! I always hate rummage through my linen closet trying to find missing pieces.
