When Your Child Has Cancer: My Guest Post For The Daily Retort

August 1, 2012

Visiting from The Daily Retort?   Welcome!

Blogging has been a huge part of my life for the past nine years and I am most happily addicted to it.   I write about laughter, pain, healing, and all the spaces between.  As a pastor’s wife living on gorgeous Roanoke Island (about ten minutes from the Atlantic), I am in absolute photographer’s heaven.

Here is a recent favorite.

Note: As you scroll through my recent posts, you will notice that most of them are about our Maltese dog, Snowy.  Please don’t allow this overdone overage of dog posts to cause you go running and screaming to some other landing point on the Internet thinking, “Ain’t nothin’ but a dog blog”.  (Which can be artfully crooned to the tune of “Ain’t Nothin’ But a Hound dog.”)

We just happen to have had a health crisis with our beloved 12-year pet this week and since Smithellaneous readers are hugely loyal Snowy fans, they would have tarred and feathered me (long distance, I hope), if I hadn’t kept them informed on Snowy’s progress.

And to my regular readers?  I’m  glad you’re here, too!

I am honored to be guest posting on The Daily Retort  today and  invite you to stop by and read the post there.

Here’s an excerpt:

I settled down into the recliner in Nathan’s room as he planted his tall, gangly self in front of me and prepared to sing. He has such a sweet, baritone voice which often brings me to tears anyway; however, when he opened his mouth and starting singing Untitled Hymn, I was stunned. I was immediately taken back to that earlier time–the car, the radio, the song, the tears.

Feel free to drop by the Daily Retort  and read the rest of the piece and leave a comment over there.

Becky: There is something truly “gut reaching” about An Untitled Hymn. The first time I heard it I found myself sobbing…and I am not generally a crier. I think it speaks to everyone who hears it directly to their soul. I have the Youtube version on my favorites. Thank you for your post!

(* bo’sun’s whistle sounds *)  “ATTENTION ON DECK!  NOW HEAR THIS.  THIS IS THE CAPTAIN SPEAKING.”   (Shucks, I’ve always wanted to say that!)  😉

(Ahem) YOU have absolutely NO control over what your readers like or don’t like.  😉  Sorry, them’s is just the rules.  Your readers were either born liking something, or learned to like it somewhere along the way.

So, YOU just keep being Becky, write what Becky likes to write about, in the way that Becky likes to write it.

The rest of us will keep on reading and ENJOYING it the way we have been doing.

    CAN I GET AN AMEN?

Oh, one more thing – It may well be true that Snowey, um, “Ain’t never caught a rabbit.”  But if that is the case, if you ask me, that is to his credit!  (And he’s still a friend of mine.)  😉

Oh wait, I forgot — “THAT IS ALL.”  (Always wanted to say that part, too.)  😉

    Fred & Lucy  😉
