Yesterday afternoon I went into Nags Head to run some errands for the church and get my hair cut. I had actually grabbed my Nikon as I left because I knew I would be out there around sunset and I haven’t had a chance to take many pictures off of Roanoke Island where we live.
Well, I’m glad I thought to do the whole camera grab thing because I was about halfway home when I happened to glance to my right and see incredible loveliness. Of course, Mr. Nikon and I had to pull over.
An hour later when I finally walked into our house, I told Steve and Sarah, “I was detoured by a sunset.”
After all these years of living with me, they know exactly what sunset detours are and they know how important they are to me. Few thing give me greater joy than stepping aside from the crazy pace of life and really appreciating and capturing the beauty God sends our way.
I mean, if I were God?
And I had created last night’s sunset?
I’d be pretty happy if a frazzled, busy, middle-aged pastor’s wife pulled off the road for a few minutes to breathe it in, to appreciate it, and to add it to her memory bank of life’s beautiful moments.
I love a sunset and these that you have captured are just breath-taking! Thanks for taking the time to take the photos and share them with us.
Lisa,
It is such a JOY to get to share those photos and I’m so happy you love sunsets as much as do! 🙂
Beautiful!!
Michelle,
Thank you. I was glad to be at the right spot at the right time.
Love the sunsets!!! Makes me want to come back but no time now. I also have to remember I have 2 dogs and a cat to find care for whenever we leave overnight. That makes a difference. Just waiting for the upcoming grandchild–my daughter-in-law called today and everything is going well. No early labor so far. We may have a baby before your birthday as he/she is due March 7th. Maybe on your birthday? Take care and God bless.
Ann,
That is so exciting to wait for our a new grandchild. Woo-hoo! And yes, being born right on my 50th birthday would be quite lovely.
God’s handiwork is so amazing – and you have such a talent for capturing it and sharing it with us.
Jessica,
God’s handiwork is amazing indeed. And to think that He didn’t even have to make sunsets beautiful! I love, love, love capturing beauty. Thanks for your encouragement!
Thanks for sharing these beautiful photos! Have you thought about turning some of your photos into a card series?
Liz,
Yes, in just a week or two I will start offering my photo cards for sale!
I’m excited!
That is very exciting news
Thanks, Patti! I’ve been “threatening” to do it for a long time but am finally getting it together.
breathtaking, each and every one of them
Nancy–thanks! I love a beautiful sunset.
Oh, yes, Becky, you are sooooo talented. And God’s work is pretty darn incredible, too! You two make a great team!
Sue,
I makes the beauty; I photograph it. I’m a happy woman.
I’m pretty sure you meant to write HE makes the beauty….
If only your ego were that big to say that…then we wouldn’t need to encourage you more. But your humility usually abounds, so I am pretty confident that I am right about this one. 🙂
Sue,
Um, yep, I did mean to say HE makes the beauty. And I am ever so glad that I am not the one in charge of making the beauty AND photographing it! Thanks for so diplomatically clearing that up. 🙂
I can’t wait to get back there and see some in person! Less than two months now…
Cindy,
Looking forward to seeing you! And I know you’re looking forward to seeing those beachy sunsets. (Of course, you’ve got plenty of gorgeous sunsets on the West coast, that’s for sure!)
That was so soothing to the soul … I do love beach sunsets also! In fact, I can’t think of anywhere I feel more close to God than sitting on a beach chair with the sand between my toes and watching and listening to the waves roll in. Beautiful pics!
Karen,
Soul soothing is a great way to describe a water sunset. I was definitely feeling soothed taking the pix.
Awesome photos Becky! Was in the OBX area three years ago for a brother’s wedding and had a great time. Thanks for sharing.
Steve, I didn’t realize till we moved here that the OBX is one of the top wedding destinations in the country; I can understand why your brother would want to get married here. Thanks for stopping by Smithellaneous!
So, so beautiful! I, too, love the splendor and beauty of God’s creation and soak it in whenever I see something like this. Great pictures!
LeeAnne,
Soaking it in is right–no better description for it.
Beautiful… enough said!
🙂
Wow- gorgeous photos! Thank you so much for sharing them
They really brightened my day.
Jenna,
Knowing that I’ve brightened someone’s day brightens MY day.
Simply amazing! Wow!
Heidi,

Simply fabulous.
