Made it to D.C. last night about midnight. We had been up since 5 am so navigating an enormous city after a long day was not so much fun but Steve (and our GPS) got us safely to our hotel.
However, as were checking in, Sarah suddenly went completely pale–face, skin, lips, everything–and said, “Mom, I’m going to throw up!”
After being informed that there were no public bathrooms in the lobby, we flailed around like the Three Stooges trying to rush her to our room which was up eight floors. (Steve stayed downstairs to finish checking in.)
Sarah just about passed out on me in the elevator on the way up; I was holding her arm and yelling, “Breathe deep! Breathe deep!”
We rushed down the hall to our room and in my great consternation and fatigue and general overwhelment, I spent about three minutes inserting the key card in the door the wrong direction and saying, “It’s not working! It’s the wrong room! Hold on! Breathe deep!”
I finally realized my mistake and got the key turned around and the door opened. It’s a good thing Sarah has a calm and level-headed mother to help her through her crises.
She’s feeling a bit better this morning but still a little wan. We’ll take it slowly today and try to stay inside buildings as much as possible.
If the first day is any indication, our Great Road Trip of 2012 should be an interesting one!
No public bathrooms in the lobby? Oh my goodness. That MUST be a D.C. thing. Surely, since you were checking in, they could have found a bathroom for her down there? They’re lucky to not have been disinfecting an elevator, but they would have certainly deserved it. I hope Sarah feels better quickly so that the road trip can truly be GREAT!!! xoxox…
Pam D,
Well, if there were any bathrooms hidden away, we weren’t given access. Thankfully, she ended up not throwing up but it was pretty dicey there for a few minutes. I agree with you–it would be a whole lot easier to escort someone to an employee only bathroom than to clean up a mess! (But fortunately, Sarah had her level headed mom to help her through her crisis.)
Poor Sarah … poor parents of Sarah. :/ Nothing like being sick while away from home. Hoping and praying she’s feeling better soon, and you all enjoy your Great Road Trip of 2012! 🙂
LizziLou,
Yeah, it was definitely not an auspicious start to our vacation. (Especially coupled with the car breakdown.) But vacations are all about making memories–I don’t guess they always have to be GOOD memories! 🙂
hmm… doesn’t sound like the hotel staff was too helpful.
Hopefully, Sarah feels better today. Too bad that she doesn’t have faithful Snowy to help her feel better.
Mrs. Pam,
Sarah hasn’t been through very many sicknesses in her life without Snowy to nurse her back to health. I’m not sure if I’m being as good a nurse as Snowy, or not. I’m trying!
Aww….. Huge Hugs to you Becky (and, of course, Sarah too!) Our family will be praying that you guys have a wonderful vacation.
Dianna,
Thanks for the hugs and prayers. We have made it safely to Wisconsin and Sarah is doing better; not wonderful, but better!
🙁 hope Sarah feels better soon! Have a great trip!
Rebecca,
Thanks for taking the time to send your happy thoughts our way. Other than the sickness, we’re having a wonderful trip.
