Yesterday Steve and I had to go out to Rodanthe for a church-related appointment. We left for the appointment a little early and as I puttered around and took a few pictures, it occurred to me (not for the first time), that God did a really good job when He perused his color palette and decided on blue for sky and water. I mean, can you imagine an orange sky? Or a purple sky? Or a black or a green sky? Ick.
Blue is a serenely, utterly, completely, wondrously, marvelously perfect color for sky and water. Wouldn’t you agree?
I love that in this picture you can hardly even see where the sky leaves off and the water begins. It’s all just one big wash of beautiful blue.
The 2-lane road that goes down the barrier islands looks like it’s been unchanged for untold numbers of years. It’s not a beautiful spot in the sense of classic beauty, i.e., the Grand Canyon, a field of meadows, rolling wheat land, but it’s beautiful in its starkness and in the sense it gives that you have just gone to some new planet entirely.
I couldn’t resist getting a shot of the rectangle-ish shape these clouds made. Steve said he thought it was more like a parallelogram but that was too math-esque my taste, so I just called it a plain ol’ rectangle.
These next shots were taken at a place that rents out little zippy boat thingies that zoom across the water. I’m quite sure there’s a technical name for them but I have no clue as to what it is. I was just happy to have some more sky and water to photograph, with a few dashes of red thrown in for dramatic effect.
These pictures were taken at the Oregon Inlet Bridge as we headed back home. It was a gorgeous day made even better by the good company of my husband and the lovely accompaniment of blue sky and even bluer water.
A blue Tuesday, indeed.
I LOVE Hwy. 12… 🙂 Thanks for the beautiful pictures! I hope to see it for real this spring!
Buff
Buff,
That is a really cool highway. No place quite like it and I’ve been to a lot of places in my life.
Beautiful pictures. I love pictures at the beach and enjoy taking them when I am around water. When we go to concerts at Myrtle Beach; however, I never see the water. Not enough time. So glad the weather is great for your picture taking.
Ann,
Yes, water pictures are really fun to take! I don’t blame you for not taking many in Myrtle Beach since you have so much great music to listen to while you’re there!
I would love to have a beautiful blue day with my husband. But, alas, tax season is in its full throw and he must work. I am more of a mountain person than a beach person but the pictures you provide do give me the itch to head that way for a vacation very soon. Even my kids were talking last night that they would like to go to North Carolina for vacation this year.
Leigh Anne,
I’m sure you and your family do a Happy Dance when April 15 arrives. I love the mountains, too, especially long, leisurely drives through them. But if your family is thinking of a beach vacation–bring it on! You’ll love it!
Wow….. Amazing pictures Becky
Nancy, thanks! I’m thankful I get to take them and thankful I have people to share them with!
Such beautiful pictures. Love the last one especially.
Diane,
Thanks; I liked that last one, too!
Becky,
So enjoyed these photos, especially since I know that 10 days from now Chlorita and I will be in the Outer banks. Perhaps this trip we will take another drive down that way, well if we can stay off the beach!

You all do need to take some time to hear toward Hatteras and/or Ocracoke while you’re here. It’s pretty cool!
2 lane road that hasn’t been changed for untold years.. hehehehehe.. that’s funny, considering it has 🙂
you know – isabel in 2003: caused a HUGE breach in the island
and then more recently the breach of hatteras island caused by irene
sorry if it sounds like i’m laughing at you, i just thought the irony was amusing. 🙂
Brooke,
No need to apologize for the irony! 🙂 I guess when you look at it through eyes of the links you included, a lot of things have changed. And yet when you drive along the 2-lane road and just see sky and sand dunes everywhere, it still seems unchanged.
It’s truly a unique place.
blue is my favorite color calms my soul. these pictures are great as always. I take a lot of pictures but just dont have the eye for the right balance in them. my brother is a photographer (not sure of spelling on that) I didint get that talent.
Sharon,
I agree that blue is a very soothing color. You don’t have to have a great eye for photography to enjoy taking pictures!
