Birthdays, Tea Bags, and Ancient Horns.

September 2, 2024

You know how dabs of craziness can break out in our home on occasion? Well, our birthday celebration for Sarah and Andrew was no different.

I’ll let these photos tell the story.

To save you the trouble of guessing what this was all about, I’ll give you the lowdown.

Nathan took a tea bag out of his cup and lay it beside his plate. Steve saw the opportunity for some humorous drama (not to mention dramatic humor), so he picked the bag up and popped it into his mouth.

I didn’t get the picture of him sitting there nonchalantly with the string hanging out of his mouth but I’m sure you can imagine it.

Nathan and Noah finally retrieved said string and bag amid much merriment.

It really does not take much to amuse our family.

The birthdays we celebrated . . .

were five years for Andrew and twenty-nine years for Sarah. Since the event was a brunch (due to work schedules), the dessert  Sarah requested was cinnamon rolls. Meagan carried Andrew’s cinnamon rolls to him and Madison carried Sarah’s rolls to her. (Sarah’s rolls were delivered before the photo was taken.)

After brunch . . .

the kids found an old plaything to amuse themselves with. And when I say old, I mean old.  Like 150 years old.  We have two of them.

I’m not sure how these were originally used–I think maybe hunting horns.  The kids love to blow them as loud as is humanly possible and they are especially pleased when they can produce sounds that imitate certain bodily functions.

Once again, great merriment ensured.

Well, except for Tippi.  No ensuing merriment there.

School is getting geared back up.

Gage starts back teaching next week and is looking forward to returning to the classroom.

Meagan has just started her tenth year of teaching. She and the kids are in a hybrid school where they are in the classroom three days a week and in a homeschool setting for two days.   They love that schedule.

I’m just finishing up a four-day weekend which I have truly enjoyed. My goal was to leave the house as little as possible and I have succeeded. Few things made me happier than just puttering around the house.

I hope your Labor Day weekend has been great.  I am looking forward to fall, changing leaves, and cooler temps. (But not so much pumpkin spice everything.)

What about you?

What have you done this Labor Day weekend?

Were you one of those kids who loved going back to school or dreaded it?

Are you a lover of all things pumpkin spice?

What is your projected lowest temp this week? Ours is 55.  We Southerners start getting excited when we see our temps drop into the fifties.

I cannot imagine, putting a teabag in my mouth and holding it there for fun.
Those horns are so interesting. My mother-in-law had one that was made out of some kind of animal tusk, and it was extremely loud when blown through properly. She told me years ago that it was some kind of hunting horn that her father used in the woods. My husband‘s family is quite musical and are interested and all sorts of noise/music making devices. He’s especially fond of drums.
I’m sure that Gage and Megan are excited to be back into their respective classrooms after a nice summer respite. I was always ready to get back to school after summer.
I am so ready for fall and the cooler temps that come with it. I don’t particularly enjoy the shorter days and the early darkness in the afternoon, but having cooler temps makes up for it. I don’t love or hate pumpkin spice things. If I had to pick a favorite scent for fall, it would be cinnamon or apples. If I had to pick a favorite fall flavor, it would be apples.
Living in South Georgia means that we will have 80s and 90s well into September. Our first hint of fall won’t come until October or later. We may have to make some trips up north just to get some cooler temps.

      Lisa,

Yes, I agree about the teabag; can’t imagine that it would taste very good. But Steve loves to get a laugh! 🙂

Sounds like your family’s horns are in the same category as ours–loud and used in hunting! It’s fascinating to think of all the different times they were used through the years.

Ooh. Those are some hot temps to have through September. October is coming!!

My father in law was in town this weekend. We went for a long bike ride, jumped in a cold lake, and ate lots of delicious food. We are going camping at the end of this week, and the projected low is 44. A nice change from the low 90s this past weekend. Our leaves are just starting to change, which is a treat!

      Robin,

Jumped in a cold lake? I think that is way outside my comfort zone. I’m the kind that goes in inch by inch. 🙂

Sounds like it was a really great weekend with another one to come. Enjoy!

Lowest temp for the week will be 54 here in Maryland. Woohoo! So over the humidity. Happy Birthday to Sarah and Andrew! The Grands look adorable all lined up. Growing so fast.
    Happy Short Week ahead 🙂

      Lesley,

      Fifty-four is great; so invigorating!

I’m enjoying my short week; almost to Thursday already. And we all know what comes after Thursday! 🙂

We definitely did a low-key Labor Day Weekend which was wonderful. I always enjoyed going back to school – except for the getting up early part. Like you, I’m not a fan of pumpkin spice. I did put a few fall-ish decoractions out today so I’m ready for fall. Now if our weather will just cooperate. Our lowest forcast temp for the next week is 65 – but that’s better than the 79-80 we’ve been dealing with. And the really exciting part is no 90’s in the 10-day forcast! Enjoy your cool overnights and have a wonderful week!!

      Sue Ellen,

I know. I love it when I look at a 10-day forecast with a nary a sign of the 90’s. I’m hoping we are done with those for the year.

You’ve done well getting fall decor out already. We might find a pumpkin or two with which to bedeck our porch but that will probably be it.

Happy Birthday to Sarah and Andrew. Enjoy kindergarten Andrew-as a former kindergarten teacher-I think kindergarten is the best.
We did nothing this labor day-just our normal routine. When you are retired, holidays like labor day are not as noticable.
I did love going back to school. Loved getting new supplies-both as a student and a teacher. I did not like having to get up early though. That is the only draw back to school.
I love pumpkin pie, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin bread, and pumpkin scones. I am not a fan of any other pumpkin spice foods or drinks.
Don’t know the projected low temp but it was 50 when I got up this morning at 8:00. I am looking forward to fall and cooler temps. A friend is coming the end of Sept and I hope the leaves turn so she can see their splendor.

      Patti,

New school supplies are the best. There is nothing quite like that new supply smell. Ahhh . . . the memories!

I think it would be fun to teach kindergarten; so rewarding to teach a child something for the very first time. I know you have good memories from those teaching years!
