A lot has been going on around here . . .
I mentioned in my post last Friday that Sarah and I were headed out to Campbell University for a campus tour.
We were both amused when we came downstairs dressed in the same colors—orange and brown.
She wore orange because it’s the color of the college; I wore orange just because I love it. At any rate, we were a matched set.
Sarah has never driven for more than about 90 minutes at a time before, so it was a big deal for her to drive the entire four hours. (With a stop or two for gas and snacks.) She did great!
She also drove for the first time on an Interstate where she was sandwiched between two semi trucks and traffic that was screaming past her at 15 miles over the speed limit. I told her, “Just stay in the right lane this first time out and you’ll be fine.” And she was.
I was very impressed with the college’s welcoming of potential new students. There was this sign . . .
and this sign, too.
We really liked our campus guide who escorted us around on a golf cart done up in the campus colors. When Sarah saw these two signs on campus, she just about swooned.
(The following four pictures are from the college website.)
The chapel.
Even the flowers bloom in Campbell orange.
The library where they serve free cups of Starbucks!
We also stopped by Barton College on the way home.
Sarah hasn’t made a final decision on a college yet (there is one other she is considering) but she is going to go ahead and apply again to Campbell and see what kind of financial package is offered. She already applied and was accepted two years ago before deciding to go to the Community College. We are also embarking on the Great Scholarship Search so if anyone has any helpful information about finding scholarships, please share!
My little girl isn’t so little any more.
I can’t quite believe she will be 20 years old on the 23rd of this month.
For the past several months, our church has been a part of the planning process for a 2-day Christian Music Festival with a variety of bands, musicians, and speakers.
The first day of the festival (this past Saturday) we experienced a windy, deluge-y kind of day, not at all ideal for an outdoor event. But still, a few hundred people showed up and we persevered.
The women in our church had volunteered for one of the meal slots to feed the band members and speakers and they ended up having to carry many dozens of items many hundreds of feet through many droplets of rain. They were real troopers, though, and got ‘er done! One of the women told me it was stressful at first but then they ended up having a lot of fun.
You might as well have fun, right?
Thankfully, late in the afternoon on Saturday, the sky cleared . . .
and yesterday was nothing but blue skies.
This fella showed up a couple of times–speaking one time, singing a song the next.
Don’t you love the water behind the stage? Such a picturesque place for creativity to be showcased.
Steve was backstage part of the time and nabbed this shot.
Sarah and a few friends from church really enjoyed all the music.
One of the highlights for me was seeing this absolutely gorgeous dance done by two women from our church. Breathtaking.
All in all, it was a great event and a great privilege to be a part of it.
And that’s what’s been going on around here.
Hi Becky and Sarah,
Don’t know what the requirements are for services from vocational rehabilitation in North Carolina but something to look into even if they only cover a little bit. VR here in Missouri helped with my out of state college tuition years and years ago.
It has been a long time since I posted here. My laptop was out of commission and it was hard to surf on my tablet.
Becky, your photos are just awesome, as always! And yes, seeing you and Becky together – I AM having a CUTE ATTACK!!! 😉
Fred,
A cute attack is a good thing!
I thought that maybe Sarah was just like Steve and was making sure that you were color coordinated when I first saw that picture. Browns and oranges are some of my favorite colors also. I had my colors done once and came up Fall so that was perfect for me. 🙂 Good luck with the grants and bursuries. Every little bit helps.
Mel,
It DOES look like Steve had a hand in it, doesn’t it? And I just learned a new word from you–bursuries. I had never heard that and had to look it up!
Selecting a college is hard hard hard!! And then there’s financial aid, and all of that stuff. It isn’t easy, but, honestly, if I had my undergraduate to do all over again, I would. I would have made some different decisions about where I went. Anyways, good luck to Sarah as she makes this next difficult decision. 🙂
Brooke,
You’re right–it is a HUGE decision, choosing a college and finding the money to pay for it. But it’s one of those things that just has to be done!
It was a lovely trip, indeed! Just wanted to add that in addition to the lovely cafeteria, Chic Fil A, and Starbucks on campus, there is a Moe’s, a Subway, a pizaria, a Chinese restaurant, and a convenience store within walking distance of the campus. It’s practically a small town!
-Sarah
Sarah,
It was the Chick-Fil-A that made MY heart go pitter-patter! 🙂
Glad your trip went well. Looks like a lovely campus. The Barnes and Noble on campus is a definite plus in my book.
Phyllis,
I know, right? A Barnes and Noble within a few steps of where you live is a dream come true.
Twenty years old! Hard to believe. We turn around twice and they are so grown up. So glad you had a fun road trip with Sarah. What a great experience to tour college campuses and wonder and wait for their decision. Sarah is so wise, her choice will be perfect for her. My brother, who has a Ph.D. in higher education always believed that a student will know they minute they set foot on a campus if it is the right one. It worked for both of my girls. Oh, and orange is one of my favorite colors also.
Mary,
A Ph.D. in higher education? That is one smart man! And I love his philosophy on college campuses. Sarah really seemed to love Campbell. (Plus, it’s my maiden name!)
I just cannot believe that Sarah will be 20!! No more teenager. Wow.
The college campus looks so nice too. It will be interesting to see what she chooses. 🙂
LeeAnne,
Yep, we’ve had teenagers in our house for 13 years; hard to believe those days are done!
Enjoyed the pictures of Campbell. It is a pretty campus and much more there than when I attended. It looks like the library is where I had my business classes. I think it has been renamed. I believe it was Kivett Hall back then. No Barnes and Nobles or Chick a fil. Anxious to hear her decision. Check on Pastor’s child scholarship and cancer scholarship. Of course there is Pell grant. Not sure about others. I know Campbell has several available. Praying for God’s guidance. Only about two hours from us.
Ann,
Yes, they just moved the library from a smaller building into the much larger building. It is gorgeous. The law classes have been moved to downtown Raleigh which freed up some buildings for other things. A great campus!
Good ideas on the scholarship searches; we are going to pull out every category we can think of.
Becky! So blessed you are! ( Am I speaking like Yoda? ) 😉
Didn’t mean to. You both look beautiful and I praise God for healing your college girl, and just shining his love through her. I am crying with thankfulness. I haven’t been on in awhile. Lots going on. But I still think anout your family, pray for you, and hope to be able to meet you one day.
Have a fun week.
Kim from TN
Kim,
Ha. The Yoda line made me smile. Or maybe I should say, “Smile. It made me.” 🙂
I’m glad you stopped back in after your absence; hope to hear from you again soon!
