The Angry Bird

While Steve was out of town for 8 days, I made a concerted effort to cook and eat at home, even though the temptation was to order pizza in, or go grab something to go.

However, on my last night alone I figured I had earned a night free from cooking.  It took me all of two nano seconds to figure out which restaurant I wanted to order from because I knew nothing would hit the spot like my favorite sandwich:

THE ANGRY BIRD 

The Angry Bird is made up of mesquite smoked turkey, applewood smoked bacon, pepper jack cheese, red onions and raspberry chipotle sauce on grilled jalapeno cornbread.

If that description doesn’t have you doing a copious amount of salivating, here are some pictures to help the process along.

    

I don’t have a clue as to who the bird is, or why he is angry but I will promise that eating the Angry Bird will make you a Happy Human.

If you ever visit the area you can buy this hunk of heaven at The Hungry Pelican  a block from the waterfront in downtown Manteo.

    The sandwich looks delicious! I think I would prefer plain cornbread, which I LOVE, and nix the raspberry chipotle sauce. I love jalapeño poppers but I prefer white or rye bread. My favorite sandwich is a Reuben with the corned beef sliced very thin. I could never figure out how my Mom could like a peanut butter sandwich with lettuce and mayonnaise. Yuck! It doesn’t even sound good. I’m not usually one to say I don’t like something if I have never tried it, but I could never try that Peanut butter, lettuce and mayo, lol!

      Kari,

      It was the raspberry sauce and the cornbread that REALLY made the sandwich. I wasn’t even going to try it because it sounded too weird but am so glad I did.

      I agree with you on a peanut buter, lettuc, mayo sandwich. Don’t think I could go there. 🙂

    I think the Angry Bird sounds delicious but you never took me for someone that likes spicy food. It is funny how we have preconceived notions about people. My favorite is toasted peanut butter and dill pickle. Don’t knock it until you try it. 🙂

    Sounds yummy! Hmmm, what’s my favorite sandwich? You got me thinking. Tonight I’ll choose to say, a day after Thanksgiving left-over- turkey- on-homemade roll sandwich. But another time I might pick one from Panera bread. Really love Bread of Life ?

      I have to agree on Panera; they have SUCH great sandwiches. Would have to disagree on a turkey sandwich after Thanksgiving. I’m usually turkey-d out by that point! 🙂

    The Angry Bird sounds delicious! I’d also try it with roast beef instead of turkey! I think my fave comfort sandwich is a homemade grinder made like when I was a child and there was only one place to buy one locally. Also had only two choices of meat: salami (cooked) or salami (genoa), provolone was the only cheese, and olive oil all on CRUSTY roll!

      Your comment sent me running to Google to figure out what a grinder is. Turns out (according to my article) you rarely ever hear the term south of the Mason Dixon line. (So I didn’t feel so badly about not knowing the word.) Also had to research how cooked salami is different from genoa. Nothing like an intriguing comment to get the researching blood pumping.

      At any rate–your favorite sandwich sounds delicoius!

    Not a jalapeño pepper fan but grilled cornbread sounds good without the pepper. I eat just plain sandwiches–pb&j, banana with mayo on one side and pb on the other ( for protein), and tomato with mayo. Use 100% whole wheat that is stone ground flour. Jim would like your sandwich. Three of my favorites.

      Ann,

      I usually not a fan of jalapeno either, but this wasn’t overwhelming at all and gave just a little of “kick” to the flavor. I’ve never heard of mayo on one side and pb on the other! And a banana sandwich sounds good, too.

        Lots use pb with banana on the sandwich instead of mayo but I like mayo so I put one on each slice of bread and then the banana on the mayo side. That way I get fruit and protein.

          We use a lot of peanut butter in the Smith house, too, mainly because we are always looking for a good source of protein. Plus, it’s delicious and tastes like childhood. 🙂

    I think the Angry Bird sounds absolutely wonderful!!! It definitely got my salivary glands going into overdrive. 🙂 One of my favorite sandwiches is the good ‘ol BLT. With fresh garden tomatoes, it just cant be beat! I also like to make unique sandwiches and it all depends on what I have on hand at the time. Cajun turkey breast, fresh spinach, dried cranberries, extra sharp cheddar cheese and blue cheese dressing on 12-grain bread is awesome!

    Thank goodness it is almost lunchtime. This food talk is killing me! 😀

    I’m not much of a cornbread eater but the sandwich does sound good. I live alone so can understand your dilemma about trying to eat at home. All too often, I grab something on the way home. My favorite sandwich is a good old grilled cheese – any kind of cheese will do. There is a restaurant in Springfield that makes the best bread. Last week one of my co-workers sent me a loaf via another co-worker here in town. I had grilled cheese a couple times (chipotle jack and cojack combined) and bacon another. Another favorite sandwich for me is a Reuben. I had one for lunch Tuesday and brought the second half home for dinner that night.
    I read Sheri’s blog yesterday. Very good.

      I love a good grilled cheese, too, and yes, the bread makes a huge difference. I like to add thin apple slices to my grilled cheeses. I like how you add two kinds of cheeses to yours. Will have to try that.

      And now I am hungry!

Twenty years.

It's hard to believe I've been blogging that long. Many of you have been following since the first word was written all those years ago. Thanks to both old-timers and newcomers for being part of our story.
