How You Know When A Hurricane’s Headed Your Way

July 3, 2014

You know a hurricane has you in its sights when you see the following things . . .

The local hospital (where I had to go for  blood work today due to elevated liver function) starts fastening shutters in place.

The battery rack at CVS starts looking a little picked over.

Mandatory evacuations are ordered.  (From Hatteras, not from Manteo where we live)

And lastly? Jim Cantore shows up.

Looks like we’ve got everything we need! 🙂

But seriously–if you’ve been watching the weather, you know that Arthur started as a Tropical Storm and was upgraded to a Hurricane Category 1.  Now we just heard that when it hits the Outer Banks it will probably be a Category 2.

Our plans for the present are to ride it out here at home. We’ve never been through a hurricane with Summer; since she is terrified of thunderstorms, it will be interesting to see how she responds to this kind of weather. We’ve got plenty of Calm Doggie Pills on hand so we should be okay in that area.

To close, I’ll leave you with a picture of Steve who is telling Arthur to “Back Off!”  (Actually he was just between poses when I was taking a few pictures of him but “back off” makes a better story.)

I’ll continue to keep you updated as long as we can keep our electricity. The biggest concern right now is sound side flooding which we are being told could be severe with this particular storm.

Thanks to those of you who have already checked in with us by leaving messages here, on FB, or through email. So sweet to know that our Smithellaneous family is thinking about us.

Thank you, everyone for thinking of us during Arthur’s visit. Today the weather is GORGEOUS–sunny and in the 70’s. So thankful things weren’t worse.

  2. Mel says:

Stay safe and I am praying for poor little Summer that the storm doesn’t upset her too much. We used to have a 90lb. dog who turned into a big baby during any kind of storm or worse yet, when there were firecrackers going off.

Be Safe! I have been watching Arthur’s progress from the safety of Raleigh where every show is pre-empted to focus on the hurricane, also have many friends from NJ who have either relocated to OBX or are on vacation and I keep reading their fb statuses and they don’t seem so worried, me, I would be on the first bus out! I will be thinking about you tonight and will be checking in periodically, hopefully your power will hold up…..

I saw on the news (all the way up here in Canada) that a hurricane was headed to the Outer Banks, and I have been thinking of you. We don’t t have hurricanes in this part of the country but we do get spectacular thunder and lightning shows. When I was 7, our city (Edmonton, Alberta) was hit by a major tornado and 27 people were killed, many in trailor parks on the edge of the city, which were most vulnerable. It was very sad I will never forget that night, hiding in the basement with my family. Stay safe and take all the precautions and care needed!!! I’ll keep you and your town in my thoughts and prayers.

I have been thinking of you all day. So glad you updated us. I pray for your safety as well as everyone else in the area of concern. This will be a 4th of July to remember…..

Stay safe! Praying the storm brings just some much needed rain and nothing else!

  14. Praying for you – and Summer too.
