Happy Easter From Summer! (And A White Shoe Question)

April 18, 2014

Summer has donned her Easter finery to wish you a happiest, joyfullest Easter.  (She doesn’t realize that joyfullest is not a word, so please don’t tell her.)

And speaking of Easter finery, what is YOUR tradition for Easter Sunday?

Do you get a new outfit for yourself? Or for your kids?

Sometimes I have a new outfit but this year I’m going to “shop my closet” and put a little something together from what I already own. (Stuff which is comprised almost entirely of my thrift store treasures)

And another question:

In your part of the country (or in your part of the world), do you have a certain date when everyone starts wearing white?  (shoes, pants, etc.)   In some places it’s after Easter, in other places it’s after Memorial Day, and I think that maybe other places don’t have a rule at all.

Anyway, from Summer and Steve and Sarah and me—Happy, Happy Easter!  (And if you want it to be a Joyfullest Easter, that’s okay, too.)

In Texas we rarely have winter so white is “allowed” all year long. This year has been much colder than usual in these parts (South Central TX). We actually got some Dippin’ Dots snow! FUN!! The kids still had to go to school though so they were pretty bummed that day. It was delayed by 2 hours but that just made it even less fun.

I love Summer’s hairdo! How cute!

      Lizz,

Love the Dippin’ Dots snow description. 🙂 Must have been pretty exciting for you all–despite not having school cancelled!

WInter White is ok year round but actual While is only worn from Memorial Day to Labor Day in NY/NJ.

    • Becky says:

      Lisa,

Hmmm . . . how interesting to hear the differences from state to state!

I just read that TX wears white year round and then read your entry that those in NY/NJ only wear it between certain dates on the calendar.

I think that in the coastal area where we live, there’s probably not a rule at all because everything is so casual as far as dress codes.

I will wear something very old from my closet because of our Easter music and bright colors. When we were growing up Mama either made our dresses or new outfits were bought for all four including church shoes, hats and gloves for the girls. We wear white after Easter and winter white (off white) any time. I need some new white shoes but cannot find the ones I want. Naturalizer does not seem to make them any more. Happy Easter to all and Summer is just a “darling.”

      Ann,

I know you will treasure your Easter service especially being reminded of the promise of the resurrection so soon after your mom’s passing. Enjoy each moment!

Happy Easter! Summer is sure cute. I took my daughter shopping for a pretty new Easter dress to wear for our Easter dinner party Sunday. I will likely dress up too, but in something I already own. I’m not sure about the etiquette of wearing white at certain times of the year, so I just wear it throughout the year. It’s been really snowing hard the past few days, speaking of white and at least a foot of snow has accumulated during this time. To cheer up my flower and sunshine starved self, I drove out to my favorite indoor greenhouse yesterday. They had a whole bunch of seedlings on sale for really cheap so I bought one for each of our 21 guests to Sunday’s easter dinner. My dining room table is now covered in plants and ribbons and stickers as I’m wrapping them in ribbons and attaching name cards to each. My plan is to use them as table decor, and then send each guest home with a tiny little plant to remind them that even though it feels like we have fallen into the chronicals of Narnia’s “Always winter but never Christmas, ” that soon spring will come! !

    • Becky says:

      Jenna,

What a delightful thing to do for your Easter dinner guests! I know they will be so delighted and pleased with your thoughtfulness and the needed reminder that spring really is coming. And dinner for 21? Whew! I get overwhelmed just thinking about it. Hope you have a lovely, lovely time!

Happy Easter to all the Smithes – I hope the Easter bunny is especially kind and generous to that cute Summer. I feel like you can wear what you want, when you want, as long as it suits the weather – and this year, that is a quandry….I still have my winter coat available!

    • Becky says:

      Mary,

I am certainly hoping the day comes soon when you can pack that winter coat far, far away!! Thanks for the Easter wishes.

What better time than Easter to employ the “tried and true” North Carolina word “Joyfullest!” Summer looks soooo beautiful! (And joyful as well) Wishing you peace during this Easter season. Fred & Lucy

    • Becky says:

      Fred,

Thank you for the Easter greetings. Here’s sending wishes to you and Lucy for all the things that make you joyfullest!

A very happy and blessed Easter to the Smith Family!! I’ll be wearing something that I already have. However, when I was a child, I always got a new dress, shoes, hat AND gloves! My, how times have changed. 🙂 When my kids were young, I always got them new clothes; pants and shirt for our son and, when she was younger, I usually sewed a new dress for our daughter. I loved doing that!

As for the white ‘rule’, around here I have heard ‘no white until after Memorial Day’ but I don’t really follow that. My wardrobe is so limited that I wear what I need to, when I need to.

    • LeeAnne says:

Oops! Forgot to tell Miss Summer just how beautiful she looks in her Easter finery! 🙂

    • Becky says:

      LeeAnne,

I am in awe of anyone who knows how to sew; your daughter was blessed to have those new dresses sewn with such love.

It’s true that times have changed as far as the way people dress on Easter; when I was a girl I remember wearing a little hat and white gloves. Oh, how I loved those gloves! 🙂

  9. Michelle says:

Happy Easter Smith Family 🙂 I try to wear something pretty on Easter (spring like if the weather is cooperating). Good luck finding your outfit for Easter. I don’t follow any traditions when it comes to white shoes and white pants as I’m to afraid I will ruin them.

    Xoxo’s

    • Becky says:

      Michelle,

Yeah, white is one of those colors that dirt seems to be attracted to in a major way. The few times I wear it, I always end up putting it in the wash immediately. It is a lovely, fresh look if one doesn’t mind a little extra laundry!

  10. Mrs. Pam says:

    lookin’ good, Miss Summer.
seems like now there is regular white, and winter white… so I imagine white clothes are good year round.
have no clue about shoes anymore. used to be after memorial day, as I recall.

    • Becky says:

      Mrs. Pam,

I didn’t know about regular white and winter white!

Of course, there’s also off white and beige and cream so it certainly makes things complicated!
