The Thing Post (October 2017 Edition)

October 27, 2017

It is time yet again for a Thing Post, which simply means I feature a whole bunch of things that don’t make up a post by themselves but are still worth sharing.

So let us begin, shall we?

Thing One

Monday night, Steve and I and our worship team were invited to Mt. Olivet Methodist in Manteo to be a part of their
4-day Fall Revival where a different pastor in the area is invited to preach each night.  This is such a cool thing to do, especially since the other pastors are from all different denominations, not just Methodist.

THAT is the way church should be.

Thing Two

Sarah was home for fall break last week;  Summer is always as happy as we are to see her.

When she walked to the car Sunday afternoon to go back to school, she was wrapped in such lovely light.

Steve was putting his coffee down so he could get Summer’s leash on.

Another captured moment showing the peaceful quietude between the ones I love.

Thing Three

For some reason when I got to church early Sunday morning, I decided to take this photo of the parking lot–empty except for Steve’s and my vehicles.  It just seemed like a good snapshot of our lives.

Steve and me. At church. Working. Together.

(Steve parks further from the door to leave the closer spaces for other people. I park a little closer so I don’t have to walk so far in heels.)

Thing Four

Speaking of church, last Saturday night we had a Girl’s Night Out at the home of one of our members.  (I love that our hostess used blocks to spell the words out.)  I took a few other pictures of cool things at her home, including the creative idea of storing cookbooks in a wooden high chair and a unique “towel apron” that you put around your neck; it protects your clothes and always gives you something to wipe your hands on. (Single click on any photo in collage to see them all full size.)

Thing Five

On my way to Greenville last Tuesday, I stopped for a few photos. I so dearly love the peace of the morning.

Thing Six

Speaking of lovely views, our decorating elves at church got the platform decked out for fall. I’m always amazed by people who know how to decorate.

In closing . . .

There are so many good things to be thankful in this season of thankfulness.

I’m especially thankful that today is a gorgeous fall day, sunny, cool, and sporting a Carolina blue sky with which to top it all off.  Is there any feeling better than walking out onto your front porch and breathing in the aroma of autumn?  I think not.

What about you? If you were going to write a Thing Post, what are some of the things you would mention?

  1. I love the hearing about your things’! So glad you get to see all your kids and families for the holidays, much nicer that way. I will get to see my daughter from Florida for both Thanksgiving and Christmas! She is a special ed teacher and so she gets vacation time and can come home! My other 2 daughters are local in Central NY so I see them too! My things lately, a huge pine tree cut down in my front yard, the trunk was 4 feet wide. Whole new look.
My silly puppy . Wish I could post a video here, she’s so funny. If you’re bored check out the last video on my Facebook page. You will laugh!

      Michele,

I did watch your video. Did I hear correctly your dog’s name is Summer? She is certainly attached to that tennis ball! I love that determined look on her little face. 🙂

A tree that big would make a HUGE difference in your lawn. And a lot less pine straw to rake up!

Beautiful pictures Becky of the morning light. Will Sarah be home for Thanksgiving? Will you be seeing Nathan over the coming holidays? They are coming right up. The hostess for the night out is very clever, I always admire people who think outside the box.
If I was going to write a ‘thing post’, I would include the fact that my sister just had a brain MRI for sudden hearing loss in one year and we are anxiously waiting for results. I would also list my attempt to hang pretty dewdrop string lights around Sarah’s bedroom and after I was all done, she didnt like them because they were ‘new’. LOL. (She is getting used to them now). Finally, I would mention that maintaining a weight loss is a lot harder that actually loosing it (40 pounds). My goal this winter is not to regain any of it.

Happy Fall, your porch looks lovely!

    • Becky says:

      Lesley,

Thanks for the porch compliment. I’m very insecure about my outdoor decorating skills so it’s nice to hear it looks ok. 🙂

Yes, Sarah will be home for Thanksgiving and maybe even a weekend before that. We are going to Florida the week before Christmas to see Nathan and family and then on to Charlotte from there.

A man in our church just had hearing loss and one ear and went for an MRI; kind of a coincidence the same thing is happening to your sister. Nothing serious for him. I hope your sister gets good news.

Forty pounds is amazing! And yes, not regaining it is a whole lot easier than losing it again. Don’t ask me how I know. You CAN keep it off. I believe in you!

Let’s see – my pastor parks way off in the corner of the parking lot also.
It’s 41 here today with a wind chill of 33. Supposed to get down to 29 over night with a freeze warning until 10 tomorrow.
I helped at Trunk or Treat at my church last night, evening started out okay. Turned windy and cold by end of the evening. I was handing out tickets for a free taco for each person as well as stamping their hands that they got one. Kind of hard to put gloves on and do that.
Looking for to this weekend. No real plans but it’s been a long week.

    • Becky says:

      Phyllis,

Sometimes a weekend with nothing planned is the very best kind–especially after a long week.

Twenty-nine degrees? I can’t even go there. Supposed to be a high of 72 here today which suits me just fine. Stay warm!

Wow! I love you post with lots of little things that end up being lots 🙂 Well, I went to visit my son, daughter in law and granddaughter last weekend and had such a great time, the weather has been fantastic so I have gotten lots of my outside work done, Lots of leaves to rake and haul into the woods, My garden is put to bed for the year, not nicely but its to bed, ha! We had our first snowfall of the year last night and received about 4 inches, ugh! The roads were so nasty and icy this morning. Lastly, I get to see my newest grandson this weekend. He will be 6 weeks old on Monday 🙂 Oh, the preciousness of babies. Wendy

    • Becky says:

      Wendy,

You’re so right about babies being so precious. Nothing sweeter on this earth. And visits with a loved son and daughter-in-law are true treasures.

Good thing you got your leaves raked and your garden bedded before winter swooped in. It’s hard to believe it’s that time already.

  5. Catherine says:

Well life is hectic with a sick loved one. There’s so much in taking care of that loved one. And the stories being told by that loved is incredible!

We are having a birthday party for my Sarah and her cousin Robbie. We always had them together when they were kids. So we thought let’s do it again!

It’s the incredible shrinking house!! Lol! Since my mom moved in it shrank!!

I love the fall weather and the cooler temps. Not into Halloween but the harvest decorations make me happy. Happy Fall!!

    • Becky says:

      Catherine,

Happy birthday to Sarah and Robbie. It’s a fun idea to have a cousin party.

I hadn’t realized your mom had moved in with you. Blessings to you as you juggle being a wife, a mom, a daughter and a caregiver all at once. I’m glad your mom’s final days are filled with love and stories.

  6. LeeAnne says:

It is finally getting below freezing (29 last night and 23 tonight) here so my potted flowers are done. Sad day. The wind has been blowing like no one’s business. Time for it to STOP! We are going to go celebrate our grandson’s 4th birthday this weekend….can’t wait! We got a new furnace and it is just amazing! We are finally comfortable and it has enough ummph to warm (or cool) the entire house. YAY!!! The skies are so blue here and we, too, are enjoying the smells of autumn. Oh, and picking up leaves, leaves, leaves. We have 5 really huge trees and this time of year keeps us hopping! Have a wonderful Friday!!

    • Becky says:

      LeeAnne,

Isn’t it amazing how a (relatively) siple thing like a new furnace is just so great? Especially if the old one wasn’t doing the job, a new one is just the most wonderufl thing. Sounds like it was good timing with 23 degree weather! Enjoy the cozy comfort of being indoors with a furnace that actually does what it should do!

And yes, the smells of autumn are beyond-words-lovely. So poignant and evocative of years past.

  7. Buff says:

Richard and I are in Elizabeth City today and yesterday for Board of Trustees meeting at mid-Atlantic Christian University. Our alma mater and where we met. We had dinner Wednesday night at Monterro’s, a lovely restaurant housed in an old house. When we got out of the car the Pine straw smell was overwhelmingly wonderful. I have always said the Carolina pines are the one thing I missed most living in Indiana. And OBX of course. ?. And the Carolina blue sky. There isn’t another one as pretty. Love Fall especially here. And now I live in Knoxville which is also beautiful in its own majestic way. But I’m still a beach girl through and through.

    • Becky says:

      Buff,

The funniest thing. I pulled up your comment on my phone just after I arrived in Elizabeth City yesterday. Quite the coincidence!

Sarah actually attended a weekend, young adult conference at Mid Atlantic a couple of years ago. I didn’t know it was you and Richard’s alma mater; it seems like a great school.

I had never heard of Monterros so I looked it up. The pictures are fabulous; definitely would like to give it a try! I especially loved that they provided you with a pine straw smell as you got out of your car. 🙂

  8. Ann Draper Martin says:

I am thankful today that we have been able to spend another week in the TN mountains to celebrate Jim’s birthday. Thing one would be driving here Sunday and seeing the trees and getting here in time to hear Karen Peck and New River. Thing two was seeing Guy and Angie Penrod and talking with her. We were in four of his concerts. Thing three would be enjoying a day of shopping and having dinner with people we had not met. Getting to be a witness to them was awesome. Thing four was driving to a craftsman village yesterday and having dinner with friends. Now today thing five will be celebrating Jim’s birthday and hearing Jeff and Sheri Easter. Dollywood has done great providing Southern Gospel music all this month. We are grateful. Love your pictures as usual.

    • Becky says:

      Ann,

From the FB pictures I’ve seen, it looks like you guys have had a wonderful time. It doesn’t get much better than driving through the mountains in the fall, seeing a crafstman village, having meals with wonderful people and hearing great gospel music.

Hooray for Jim’s birthday and hooray for a week filled with great Things! 🙂
