The Recalcitrant Birthday Gal. And The Cake Kisser.

I am a quiet, behind-the-scenes person who does not suffer spotlights gladly and does not really love parties, especially if I have to be the focus of attention.  So when Steve sat me down two weeks ago and asked what I would like to do for my 50th birthday,  I was ready with a stunning plan.  “Well, we could just order in a pizza and you and Sarah and I could have a little cake and rent a DVD to watch together.”

Party Animal, I ain’t.

Surgery and Singing

Steve is in Charlotte right now, sitting in a waiting room with his dad while his mom undergoes a four-hour surgery on her back.

Vernie will be in the hospital for 3 or 4 days before coming home to recuperate.  I told her on the phone last night that she should really milk it and turn being a Queen for A Day into being a Queen for a Month.  She said that was her plan.   She also added that Ken was very good at not just meeting her needs but anticipating her needs so she knows she will  be in good hands with him as her nurse.

The Plan That Was Almost Unraveled By A Shampoo Bottle

Our mystery guests have arrived from Florida!

Rev. Frank and Sheri Hawley are not only our dear friends but also the parents of our wonderful daughter-in- law, Meagan.  (Unfortunately, their arrival at the Norfolk airport did not coincide with the arrival of one of their two suitcases carrying most of their clothes and toiletries.  Yikes. )

Since we will be leaving in a few moments for a marriage retreat that they are speaking at, I am pulling out a favorite post from the archives to share today.   It’s especially fun to read this in light of the fact that the  particular boyfriend and girlfriend mentioned in this story really did get married!

Snowy Rocks The Rabbit Ears

I realize that Valentine’s Day is supposed to be all about romance but I’m glad that it’s a holiday where chocolate can also be legally slid into the mix. If you’ve been hanging around this blog for any time at all, you know that I am a big time chocolate lover, as are many of my readers.

With that in mind, Sue G, a cyber friend and commenter par excellence sent me some interesting facts about chocolate.

I Think I’ll Keep Him

Since Sundays start at 5 am and are long work days for Steve and me, our weekend consists of all day Friday and a half day Saturday.  Saturday should really be off altogether,  but we always manage to still have several hours of work to be done so we end up at the church at least half that day, too.  Maybe someday we’ll find a way to git ‘er done during the week but for now, Friday is our Big Day Off.

This morning after getting a few things straightened up in our bedroom,  I came downstairs to witness this inspiring sight in the kitchen.

Rain, Crab Pots, Hope and Autographs.

(At the end of this post, you can find out what I’ve decided to do concerning the “Read More” option.)

Saturday afternoon, I drove an hour and a half to pick up Sarah who had spent a couple of days with her friend, Hope. (Hope’s mom was meeting me halfway between our two towns.)  I decided to grab my camera and leave a little early in case I happened to see any loveliness in need of capturing. Continue reading

How To Know When You’re Famous

I’ve always surmised that it would be cool (in an oddish sort of way) for a famous author or singer to walk into some random thrift store and see his or her product on a shelf.

You know how you always see old John Grisham novels and ancient casssettes by Conway Twitty?  Wouldn’t that be sort of a rush to see yourself unexpectedly in a thrift store?  You would think,  ”Wow! There I am!  I must be famous, or something.”

Well, folks, it has happened to me. Continue reading
